A group of 15 single mothers from various parts of Georgetown and from East Bank and East Coast Demerara graduated from a 10-week cake decoration course on Friday, courtesy of the Benschop Foundation.
At the graduation ceremony, held outside of the office of the Benschop Foundation headquarters in Robb Street, the single mothers were presented with certificates as proof of their participation in the course. The aim of the cake decoration course is to empower the single mothers.
Present at the graduation were the former Miss Guyana World, Olive Gopaul, and reigning Miss Guyana World, Candace Charles, who said she hoped all of the participants appreciated all of the hard work put in to make the programme a success.
Gopaul said she was one of the people who recognised the work of the Benschop Foundation, and that as a woman she appreciated the focus on women in Guyana.
She noted that too many women were dependent on their partners, but said that even just learning a skill has so many benefits for these single parent mothers.
Audrey Hunte of the Carnegie School of Home Economics, who over the ten weeks trained the participants in the area of cake decoration, said that the whole process was exciting and noted that she was happy because the course helped the participants to become independent.
The Foundation is currently looking for 15 new participants to go through the same course in cake decoration.
