A Vey-Vey, Mahaica family is in mourning following the drowning of an eight-year-old child and her 18-month-old brother in a pond in their yard yesterday afternoon.
The children were left unattended by their mother, 25-year-old Natasha Thomas.
Randy Thomas, eight years old, and Alan Trim, 18 months old, were pulled from a pond at the back of their yard at around 16:30 hours.
At the time of their discovery, the children were holding each other’s hands.
According to reports, Natasha Thomas had left the children at home to go to a nearby shop to make a purchase.
She told Police that, as she was returning home, she received word that the children had drowned.
Kaieteur News understands that neighbours saw the children fall into the pond and immediately went to their assistance.
However, by the time they got to them, they had already perished.
A source said that, from all appearances, the younger sibling fell into the pond and his sister tried to rescue him, but she, too, suffered a similar fate.
Police were summoned to the scene, and are carrying out investigations.
