Armed bandits carried out a daring robbery yesterday on Saffon Street, Charlestown, and made off with some $300,000 in cash. Their victims were three DIDCO employees.
At around midday, the vehicle transporting the employees was heading south along Saffon Street when a horse-drawn cart turned in front of it, blocking its path.
The vehicle was forced to stop, and a dark blue AT 192 drove up and two men armed with handguns exited.
The gunmen held the occupants of the vehicle at gunpoint and snatched the bag containing the money. They then re-entered the car, which fled through Howes Street.
At the time of the incident, DIDCO’s accounts clerk, 20-year-old Imran Ally, the driver and an armed security guard were in their vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said that the horse cart was at the junction of Saffon and Howes Streets for a while, and when the operator saw the DIDCO vehicle, he blocked the road with the cart.
After the incident, Police scoured the area looking for the gunmen, but to no avail.
Up to press time, no arrests had been made, but investigations are continuing.
