Shock waves are reverberating through Buxton after a 17-year-old villager reportedly confessed to torching the home of former headmistress Dolly Trim while the woman was in the building.
The youth, who was arrested on Friday, also reportedly confessed to another robbery, this time on another senior citizen, Adora Evelyn, 60, at Ogle Street, Friendship, East Coast Demerara on May 31.
Dolly Trim’s charred remains were discovered in the rubble of what was once her house at Friendship minutes after fire fighters doused the blaze.
According to reports, the youth told investigators that, on May 18 last, he and others had entered the woman’s house with intent to rob her.
The 71-year-old woman allegedly put up a struggle and was struck unconscious.
Kaieteur News understands that her body was then bound and placed on her bed and the house was set on fire.
From all appearances, the pensioner, who lived alone, was desperately trying to escape from the house but eyewitnesses believe that the heavy grill work hampered her efforts.
While the blaze was being attended to by members of the GUYSUCO and Guyana Fire Service crews,
neighbours said, they heard no screams from the house.
Persons who tried to rescue the woman after seeing the house on fire reported that the back door of the house was open.
They found this discovery strange, since Trim is known to secure her premises from as early as sunset.
A senior Fire Service official, who lives opposite the dead woman, had reported that upon seeing the fire he grabbed his firefighting gear, which he had at his home, and went to render assistance.
Since the fire appeared to be mainly at the front of the house, the helpers went to the back door, which they found was open.
“We jump over the gate and reach the back door. We pushed the door and it was open. We started calling for a torchlight.
The whole house was in darkness, so you had to get a torchlight. Within seconds the whole place just engulfed. We try to push out a gas stove and a bottle and we had to just retreat,” Lewis told this newspaper.
Villagers say that the former head teacher, Dolly Trim, was single and had no children.
