Jun 21, 2008 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
The writing is now on the wall, and it’s in bold caps; “President Robert Mugabe is willing to stay in power by any means necessary”, including going to war with the opposition should they win the upcoming June 27th presidential run-off elections.
In a letter dated 18th May, 2008 in Kaieteur News “The violations of human rights by Mugabe must not go unnoticed”, I had asked all political parties of the Guyana Parliament to “endorse the democracy they promote”.
I now beg those parties to show that they are committed to sounding their voices against human rights violations.
It is difficult for me to understand that as a nation, how it is that we cannot find our voice as we watch, read, and listen to all the atrocities being committed by Mr. Mugabe’s government.
After losing his parliamentary majority to the opposition in the March 29th elections and sensing defeat in the June 27th run-off, Mr. Mugabe has opened the flood gates of violations.
There have been constant postponement and interruptions of opposition held rallies.
Leader of the opposition party, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has been arrested four times within seven days, without being charged.
The General Secretary of the MDC was arrested when he arrived at the airport after being out the country for two months; the police said he was charged with treason, if found guilty he could get the death penalty.
The MDC has announced that thousands of its supporters have been imprisoned after the March 29th elections, with 66 killed either by the Zimbabwe’s security forces or the War veterans.
Entire villages have complained about being intimidated, with some villagers claiming that they were tortured and females raped.
Over five million have fled the country, with over three million taking refuge in South Africa where they have been greeted with much brutality.
Mr. Mugabe has threatened most of the foreign diplomats with expulsion, accusing them of spying and colluding with the opposition to overthrow the government.
He has also ordered all aid agencies to cease all operations across the country, forcing many in the opposition villages to go hungry.
Guyana must signal to President Robert Mugabe that we are very concerned with what we are seeing.
The loud silence from Caricom has not done much to help. We must show that as a region we are willing to condemn violations of human rights because injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.
Over the past few months the world witnessed two disasters that were beyond the controls of man, and claimed the lives of over 200,000 people in Myanmar
and China.
The world must do all that it can to prevent Zimbabwe from becoming another stain on humanity. This situation is not beyond our control.
