A local product of foster care is currently preparing a book of experiences about the many years she spent in the childcare services of Guyana.
The woman, Shivaugn Lachish, a former resident of the St. Ann’s Orphanage, revealed that she spent most of her life in child care services.
With over a decade in a children’s home and six more in foster care, Lachish said despite her bitter experiences she is nevertheless a positive product of childcare.
She made a presentation on Wednesday last at the launch of the Human Services Ministry’s minimum operating standards for Children’s Homes.
Lachish said that child protection services are vital, pertinent, relevant and adequately needed at this time.
“Children must not be exposed to harsh conditions and maltreatment,” the former children’s home resident stressed.
She noted that since children originate from various cultural, social and educational upbringings, it is the responsibility of caregivers to produce well-rounded youths.
Lachish said that discipline must be administered but must never be transformed into abuse or brutality.
According to her, foster care has provided both good and bad experiences that have helped to shape her.

Recounting her former years, Lachish recalled endless moments of loneliness, abuse, fear and hopelessness.
“There was no place to go and no one to turn to,” Lachish disclosed.
She stressed that after being placed in foster care, she never received a follow-up visit from welfare officials.
Lachish revealed that she has begun to compile a book based on her experiences.
