The11th edition of the Annual Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey Memorial week of activities will commence on Sunday with a church service at the All Saints Anglican Church and is expected to conclude on Sunday June 29 with another church service and the finals of the Football and Basketball competitions.
A number of activities have been planned for this year’s celebration which will include the traditional inter-ward football, basketball and Lawn Tennis competitions.
The football competition, which is usually the show piece of the week of activities, will be played on an U-20 basis this year and get cracking on Monday with South New Amsterdam taking on their North counterparts.
Tuesday’s action will see Central New Amsterdam and East Canje squaring off, on Wednesday the U-15 teams from North and South New Amsterdam battle for supremacy.
The U-20s will return to the park on Thursday where South NA and Canje will match skills, the final preliminary game on Friday will be between North and Central New Amsterdam. North are the defending champions.
All the matches will be played at the All Saints Scot’s Church ground and will be 70 minutes affair.
The presentation ceremony will be held immediately after the final.
The winning team will receive the Hilbert “Old Beef” Humphrey trophy, while all the members of the winning side will also received a trophy.
The second place finisher will also be presented with a trophy as well as the players. The most valuable player, most goal scorer, best goal keeper and most discipline team will also be rewarded.
The basketball competition, which is in its second year, will commence on Sunday. Six teams are slated to participate; Central New Amsterdam, Tucber Park, Canje, Fyrish, No. 41 Scheme and Smythfield.
All the matches will be played at the Vryman’s Ervin basketball court under lights beginning at 18:30 hrs.
The teams have been divided into two groups with each team in the group playing the other once at the end of which the two top teams from each group will play in the semi-finals.
The final will be played on Sunday June 29 after the football final. The winning and runner teams as well as the outstanding players in this competition will also receive accolades for their outstanding work.
The Lawn Tennis competition, which is in its third year, will be played at the Republic Bank Court in New Amsterdam, will see the players vying for supremacy in the various age groups including U-12, U-16, intermediate and seniors. According coordinator former national female champion Carol Humphrey, the playing off of this tournament will depend on the inclement weather.
The Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey week of activities is held annually by the members of the Humphrey family in celebration of “Old Beef” who was a former Berbice football player in the 50, 60 and 70.
He played alongside players including former mayor and former president of the GFF Errol Alphonso, Fuzzy Madramootoo, Ivelaw James, Albert “Fudd” Murray and Lionel Henry.
A number of his children and grandchildren went on to represent the country in various games including Football, Athletics, Volleyball, Basketball and Lawn Tennis.
Former national player Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey is coordinating the activities.
