Old foes Georgetown and Linden announced strong Under-23 line-ups for their upcoming clash in the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF)–organised Inter-Sub-Association Competition which is the feature game of a triple-header this Saturday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
With Georgetown already winners of the senior and U-20 titles, the Lindeners understandably would be trying to avoid a sweep so a keenly contested game is anticipated.
The other games scheduled are: Linden versus Berbice in a female affair and East Bank Demerara engage Berbice in an U-23 contest.
The Georgetown U-23 starting line-up will come from Ryan Stephaney, Ryan Gullen, randy Burgess, Jermaine Lovell, Jason Squires, Kevin Cumberbatch, Yannick Wade, Jermaine Hamilton, Marvin McElla, Travis Williams, Victor Rhobe and Jaime Mayers.
The Head Coach is Mark Agard with Vijay Panday as his assistant.
The Linden team is Orland Glasgow, Leonard Caleb, Dennis Anderson, Kojo Sandiford, Alwin Rodney, Stryon Obermuller, Chris Williams, Javon Nelson, Colin Benjamin, Jason Blair, Akeem Kanhai and Bonnie Wilson.
According to Tournament Co-ordinator Robert Cadogan, the U-23 games are extremely important since this is where the GABF believes that the talent pool reside and new stars will be spotted.
“We feel that new players with lots of talent will emerge and prove themselves and this is essentially what we would like to see since a team of coaches headed by Coach Larry Davis will arrive in Guyana on July 24 to conduct a four-day camp to spot and evaluate talented players with a view of recruiting them to play in colleges in the United States of America,” Cadogan disclosed.
He said that even though the sport has been off the limelight recently, all is not lost and young gifted players have a strong chance of being presented with the opportunity of pursuing a career in the game.
“There is a possibility that some of them could be selected to play in the Pro Leagues or Colleges depending on their skills.”
Davis, who coached the Guyana national team at the last Caribbean Championships, will be accompanied by two coaches Allan Walls, Head Coach of Nuevo Laredo Venados- a team in the Mexican Pro League and John Libby, Head Coach of Palo Alto Junior College in San Antonio, Texas.
“This tournament organised by the GABF is also serving as preparation for the visit of the three coaches and very shortly we will be selecting national teams in all three categories, seniors, U-23 and U-20 along with the females to engage in consistent practice matches,” Cadogan pointed out.
Meanwhile he also encouraged all basketball players to support the Guyana ‘Golden Jaguars’ on Sunday as they attempt to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Group Stage.
