Dear Editor,
I refer to a letter captioned “The Mercy Hospital: Today and Yesterday,” which appeared in your June 16th, 2008 edition of the Kaieteur News.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to state for the record that the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital has been planning and managing its operations within a strategic planning and management framework, which was first prepared with the assistance of the Sage Group in 2000.
As your readers will appreciate, especially those who are more familiar with modern management principles, the current approach to strategic planning and management is to engage in a seamless, ongoing process of planning, implementation and review.
I also wish to point out that, for any organisation in transition to strategic planning and management, this generally entails a parallel process of building up organisational capacity to effectively use the methodology.
As such, the Mercy Hospital, within the limits of its own capacity, has been reviewing and revising the original strategic plan; and the present 2006-2008 strategic plan was prepared with assistance from our overseas Mercy partners.
It is important to note that the full participation of the staff, at every level, and key stakeholders was enlisted in the preparation of the current plan.
For the information of your readers, I wish to clarify that the Board of Directors, after due deliberation, appointed a CEO, who will take over from the incumbent when she steps down at the end of this year.
I wish to state that the Board has every confidence that the CEO-designate is a person who appreciates the mission of the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and who is suitably qualified to take up the mantle.
David Yhann
Chairman
Board of Directors
