Guyana 20/20 star Lennox Cush and former West Indies ‘B’ team opener Sudesh Dhaniram propelled Guyana to a 93-run victory against the All-Star Invitational XI at Floyd Bennett Cricket Ground in Brooklyn, New York last Saturday in the first round of the 2008 Ed Ahmad New York Cricket Cup 20/20 tournament.
The 33-year-old Cush, who took a hat-trick in the last Stanford 20/20 semi-final and was player of the tournament in last month’s WIPA 20/20 tournament in Trinidad, smashed an attractive 57 as Guyana reached 170-3 off their allotted 20 overs and then captured 4-16 with his off-spin as the All-Star Invitational XI were dismissed for 77 in 15.5 overs.
The Ed Ahmad New York Cricket Cup is the premier cricket tournament in the United States and features representative teams from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Pakistan, Trinidad & Tobago and an All-Star Invitational XI.
Watched by a large crowd, 41-year-old former West Indies ‘B’ team opener Sudesh Dhaniram clobbered four sixes and four fours in an explosive unbeaten 35-ball 58 while Cush thumped eight fours and a six in his in 34-ball 57.
Dhaniram, who scored four centuries and 10 fifties in 46 first class matches between 1987 and 1995, played an array of scintillating shots and along with Cush, who scored two tons from 38 first-class matches between 1996 and 2005, entertained the crowd with their exciting partnership.
The All-Star Invitational XI struggled against the controlled Guyanese bowling and once Trinidad and Tobago 20/20 specialist William Perkins departed for 16, Guyana romped to victory.
Dhaniram (2-11) supported Cush while 36-year-old pacer Kevin Darlington, who captured 79 wickets from 30 First-Class matches for Guyana between 1995 and 2002, captured 2-17.
The Guyana team also featured USA Captain Steve Massiah, former West Indies Test spinner Neil McGarrell, Test left-hander Narsingh Deonarine, former Guyana youth players Kaleem Bux and Karran Ganesh and Bhim George who was in the 1998 Guyana First-Class 18-man squad.
