An inmate of the Georgetown Prisons died yesterday after several pellets containing cocaine burst in his stomach.
This newspaper understands that the prisoner, Howard Istan Lee, became ill this morning at around 10:30hours, and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to reports, the man was arrested and charged last week for possession of narcotics. He was on remand pending the hearing of his charge.
A source told Kaieteur News that when the man was arrested last week he was taken to the hospital after it was suspected that he had swallowed pellets, but he refused to take an x-ray.
Reports state that Police and Prison officials were unaware that the man had indeed ingested the substance until after he died yesterday morning.
