Campbelltown will clash with Air Strip when the first ever Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport sponsored Mahdia Inter-Block Football competition kicks off on June 27 in Region 8.
This was decided yesterday when the fixtures for the tournament was set by organiser Feroze ‘Beeks’ Mootoo. The competition, which will be played under floodlights, will see three teams matching skills for the Ministry’s trophy.
On Saturday June 28, Central Mahdia squares off with the winner of the first game with the final scheduled for Sunday June 29.
Central Mahdia will be captained by Nigel Ernest, while Bernard Evans and Ariel Skeete will wear the captain’s arm band in the Air Strip and Campbelltown teams respectively.
Yesterday Parliamentary Secretary in Ministry Steve Ninvalle disclosed that all three teams will benefit from the services of coach Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte who is due in Mahdia on Thursday.
Hunte is being sent by the Ministry to assist the teams in preparing for the big event and according to Ninvalle, will be in the area for one week. The coach has done similar work, with much success in Linden and Agricola, two areas where the Ministry’s Inter-Block competitions are currently being held.
The Inter-Block competition is the initiative of the Ministry and is aimed at reviving and reinvigorating the sport of football at the Grass Roots level.
Meanwhile, the Region Eight competition has attracted much attention with several persons from Linden and Georgetown signaling their intention of traveling to Mahdia for the big event.
