Former West Indies under-19 Skipper and Guyana First-Class left-hander Leon Johnson took a five-wicket haul two Saturdays ago in the Kent Premier League and scored an accomplished century the next day for Sandwich Town First X1, while Johnson’s English club team mate and Guyana under-19 batsman Vishal Singh scored a ton on Thursday in the Mid-Week tournament as he continued his impressive debut season in the United Kingdon.
Johnson, who has three fifties and averages 35.91 in eight First-Class matches, captured 5-43 against Tunbridge Wells CC before returning the next day to stroke 140 out of his team’s 217 in 40 overs against Rasra Eagles, a team made up of only West Indians from different Islands across the Caribbean.
The following Tuesday Johnson made 44 and Singh 35 as their team beat Brosdale Cricket club in a 20/20 clash.
Singh’s even century last Thursday then helped Sandwich CC to victory against Bexley CC, which had Guyanese pacer Jason Benn in their line up.
The 20-year-old Johnson, who has played two regional one-day games, smashed 110 and got support from the 18-year-old Singh (37) as Sandwich CC reached 237-4 off 40 overs to beat Nonningham Cricket club who fell for 140 as Singh took 5-6 from five overs. Johnson picked up three wickets with his leg-spin in that game.
Singh said he is enjoying his first season in England but is disappointed that in the last week, apart from his Mid-Week ton, he has not been converting his good starts into big scores.
Johnson who scored 426 runs from six matches in the last Carib Beer season at an average of 42.70 with a highest score of 94, explained that he is looking to improve his cricket in the testing English conditions in order to produce an outstanding regional one-day season for Guyana later this year.
