The Eighth of May Primary School on the Essequibo Coast was the latest school to receive substantial assistance through the Food for the Poor Sanitation Project which is geared at improving conditions at schools countrywide.
Public Relations Officer, Michelle Branker, said that officials from the charitable organisation have been travelling around with a view to finding schools that are in dire need of assistance.
However, she said that Food for the Poor was approached by teachers of Eighth of May Primary who disclosed that they needed some assistance although the school was not in such a bad state.
Branker noted though that the situation at the school entailed some damage to the toilet facility and a lack of storage for potable water.
In this regard, Branker said that funds were secured to carry out work at the school.
The project, she said, involved the replacement of five lavatories, the construction of a trestle, and the procurement of 450-gallon water tanks.
It also entailed the resurfacing of the pavement leading from the school entrance to the sanitation facility.
