Police officials said yesterday that they had captured two men whom, they say, are top lieutenants of fugitive Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins.
It is unclear when and where the men were captured, but Kaieteur News understands that the two men were held and interrogated under tight security for several hours yesterday at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary. Heavy security was also in place at the Brickdam Police Station, where the high-profile prisoners are to be detained.
One of the men is said to be a suspect in several murders, including the August 30, 2007 murder of businessman Kumar Singh, called ‘Mango Man,’ who was shot dead at his Cove and John, East Coast Demerara home.
He was also said to have been fingered in the murder of nine-year-old Christine Sukrah, who was shot while lying under her bed after gunmen fired several shots at the family’s Coldingen, East Coast Demerara premises.
In addition, he is fingered in attacks on Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, and East La Penitence Police Station.
Meanwhile, a heavily-armed Joint Services contingent yesterday continued to scour jungle terrain in the Christmas Falls area for Rawlins and five other gunmen, who are said to be hiding out there.
The gang reportedly fled into the jungle two Fridays ago after Police swooped down on their hideout, located some 300 miles up the Berbice River.
During the confrontation, 21-year-old Otis Fiffee, called ‘Mud Up’, was killed while the ranks believe that they wounded others.
The ranks recovered three FN rifles, four shotguns, and a .32 revolver; two AK-47 magazines, seven FN rifle magazines, and several rounds of ammunition from the gunmen’s well-stocked hideout.
