The Joint Services have reported no new development in the hunt for Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins and members of his gang, who are being pursued in the dense jungle several miles from the mining community of Kwakwani, Berbice River.
On Friday, a source had reported that two of the fleeing bandits were spotted by an official of the Guyana Forestry Commission.
A senior Guyana Forestry Commission official told this newspaper that it was not unlikely that a ranger would be in such a remote area.
He, however, said that he is not aware of the report made by the ranger and would be checking to ascertain how true it is.
This newspaper tried to contact several senior members of the Joint Services yesterday but was unsuccessful as telephone calls were not returned.
It has been nine days now that the Joint Services are pursuing the men who were first confronted at a remote hideout near Christmas Falls, 90 miles from Kwakwani.
During the initial confrontation, 21-year-old Otis Fifee, called ‘Mud Up’, was shot dead.
The Joint Services had expressed cautious optimism that the men would have been successfully tracked down in the jungle, since they were said to be moving without food and proper clothing.
On Thursday, a source reported that the pursuing ranks saw signs of the fleeing gunmen cutting a trail heading south further into the dense jungle.
The source said that the area where the men are heading is devoid of human habitation for almost 100 miles.
But according to a medical source, the men could survive without food for up to a month, since they could feast on water and berries and other fruits which are in abundance in the area.
There is speculation that the men may have already slipped through the Joint Services’ cordon and the silence of the security forces has done nothing to dispel these speculations.
