DEAR EDITOR,
I refer to the article, “The teaching profession is falling into disrepute” which appeared in the June 12 issue of Kaieteur News.
The writer made a few points with which I agree – indeed too many young and inexperienced teachers can be harmful to the system. The same can be said of the immodest way in which many of our female teachers dress nowadays.
The writer, however, failed to mention and address the root of the problem we are now facing with teachers. I say this because of the fact that, of the three most prominent incidents of teachers being involved in sexual relations and molestations, only one teacher was female. Also, none of those teachers were teenagers or young adults; they were all very experienced.
I submit to you that the root of the problem is the condition of the heart of these teachers. We can identify many symptoms of this problem such as the attire of these teachers and their relations with students.
The reality is, regardless of the nature of the misconduct displayed by teachers, they are all as a result of the condition of the individual’s heart.
Until the condition of the heart is dealt with, we will continue to see a myriad of questionable and destructive actions being displayed by our teachers. While the actions vary, the cause remains the same.
