More than 30 persons were left homeless yesterday after a demolition exercise was carried out on a two-flat structure situated at 22 Sendall Place, Georgetown.
The demolition was reportedly ordered by the Public Works Ministry since, according to City Mayor Hamilton Green, the state had acquired the property some years ago thus removing it from the jurisdiction of the City Council.
According to some of the now homeless people, they have nowhere to go but the streets.
They said that they were given one week’s notice to move but admitted that they did not attempt to move since there was and still is no alternative.
With their household items and other belongings, the displaced folks helplessly looked on as the place they once called home was destroyed.
A nearby dilapidated building only a few weeks ago had collapsed causing the occupants of that structure to occupy the one which was torn down yesterday.
