Bandits beat and terrorized an 89-year-old woman and her relatives after breaking down the door to their home at Belmont, Mahaica.
The robbers escaped with $185,000, jewellery and four cellular phones after the attack, which occurred shortly after midnight yesterday.
Police said that Shambaijeh Dass, 89, two 17-year-old girls, a 49-year-old housewife and a male relative had to seek medical treatment after their ordeal.
According to reports, three bandits, one of whom had a handgun, smashed down the family’s door to gain entry.
Kaieteur News understands that the family initially refused to hand over their valuables and was soundly beaten by the intruders.
The robbers eventually fled on foot after collecting cash, jewellery and cell phones from their victims.
The injured were reportedly treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation but were not admitted.
