DEAR EDITOR,
I was shocked to read the headlines in the newspapers (12-06-08) where the Guyana Bar Association criticised Minister Clement Rohee for commenting on the granting of bail by the Chief Justice to a person charged with murder.
This is the greatest contradiction I have seen in a long while.
The Guyana Bar Association is supporting the Chief Justice action based on a person’s Constitutional right to a fair hearing within a reasonable time. What about Minister Rohee’s constitutional right to freedom of expression?
Does the Guyana Bar Association know of this right? Of course not!
If it did the statement would not have been made and in the process causing the President of the Guyana Bar Association to make a spectacle of himself in making the statement.
The Guyana Bar Association criticised the Minister’s comment that case law was thrown out of the window.
It seems that the Guyana Bar Association is aware of other charges in this country where bail was granted to persons charged with murder.
This to my knowledge has never happened.
Perhaps the Guyana Bar Association can enlighten.
