Security agencies team up to battle crime at CJIA

Security at the country’s main airport is tightening.
On Wednesday, an agreement with the key agencies was signed that will see greater collaboration and monthly meetings to deal with loopholes at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
Government, in a statement on Wednesday, said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will reduce the trafficking of illegal substances.

The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Home Affairs by representatives of the Guyana Police Force, Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, Guyana Revenue Authority, Ministry of Home Affairs and the CJIA.
The MOU stipulates that the agencies meet at least once monthly to share intelligence on related issues and functions of the day-to-day activities and operations of the airport, to identify vulnerable areas within its operations and to make recommendations to enhance the overall security at the airport, said the government in the statement.
Commissioner of Police (acting) Henry Greene said that the agreement was important because it cements the cooperation that already exists among the agencies at the airport in their effort to interdict persons who may want to be involved in any criminal activity there.
The Inter-agency Committee was established last December and tasked with looking at improving the services and security at the airport and to make recommendations and advice on tightening loopholes as it relates to the movement of passengers, cargo and mails through the airport.
Government implementation of a five-year National Drug Strategy Master Plan (NDSMP) and signing on to several international conventions are interventions which demonstrate its zero-tolerance towards the drug trade, the statement said.
