Government has warned that it will go after rice millers who are delinquent in paying farmers. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, it has received reports of farmers receiving rubber cheques from the Mahaicony Rice Mills Ltd.
Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud has since asked the Guyana Rice Development Board and the Guyana Police Force to investigate all reports of rubber cheques issued to farmers, and to take necessary action, a Ministry statement said yesterday.
This latest move comes at a time when rice price is at an all time high on the world market and farmers are reportedly scrambling to utilize lands once abandoned.
Rice is hovering at between US$900 and US$1,000 per metric tonne on the world market, almost double what it was six months ago. “In an effort to ensure that rice farmers benefit from their investment and hard work, Minister Persaud had successfully made representation for an amendment to the Rice Factories Act which was tabled on December 21, 2006 in the National Assembly,” the Agriculture Ministry said yesterday. The Ministry also said that it is seeking to make sure that farmers are not adversely affected because of non-payments.
“In this regard, the Guyana Rice Development Board was also instructed to seek legal advice and possible mitigation measures to ensure the affected farmers are not exploited. Meanwhile, the Ministry would like to take this opportunity to commend those rice mills that are prompt in their payments to farmers.”
