Ray Hinds, a police constable attached to the Tactical Services Unit, was yesterday fined a total of $45,000 after he pleaded guilty to being an unlicensed driver and to a breach of insurance.
Hinds, appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, drove minibus BKK 4224 on June 6 at Croal Street, without being the holder of driver’s licence.
That same day, being an unlicenced driver, he breached the insurance policy. To both charges Hinds pleaded guilty.
In his own defence, he maintained that on the day in question he was seated in the driver’s seat but was not driving. Hinds told the court that the owner of the minibus is his best friend and at the time the bus was encountering some mechanical problems and he was just assisting.
“Your worship the minibus was stationary in front of Satro’s store and I was not driving,” Hinds maintained.
But Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that Hinds was seen proceeding east along Croal Street when he was stopped by a cadet officer and asked to produce his driver’s licence. He failed to do so.
At one stage the Magistrate asked whether Hinds wanted to change his plea to not guilty so that the matter would go to trial, but the rank said that he would maintain his guilty plea since he wanted the matter to end.
