Local petrol dealers yesterday pledged their commitment to work with the Commerce Ministry to ensure that consumers are not taken advantage of because of high fuel prices.
This was announced yesterday after the petrol dealers met with Commerce Minister, Manniram Prashad, in an effort to find some way of cushioning the effects that the escalating oil prices on the world market is having on Guyana.
President of the Petrol Dealers Association, Frank Amin, after the meeting, said that they are willing to work with the Ministry to put measures in place that will best serve the consuming public.
He noted that this is not a problem that Guyana alone is facing but the world over.
Minister Prashad said that they recently met with SOL, Guyoil and Texaco to deal with this issue.
He noted that the meeting with the petrol dealers is intended to find a way to work together in order to address the problem.
Recently, Government made several interventions, including reducing the excise tax on gasoline and zero-rating the tax on diesel in order to keep the price of gasoline below the $1,000 mark.
This is due to an arrangement with the Minibus Association whereby they cannot increase fares unless gas prices go above that mark.
Over the last few months, Minister Prashad has held several meetings with various stakeholders in addressing this situation.
