The country waits with bated breath for the outcome of the manhunt for the men who recently managed to elude a Joint Services dragnet at Christmas Falls. So concerned are the citizens that there have been letters in the press urging that tracker dogs be used.
The terrain, however, would not lend itself to such a chase because even if the dogs can by now pick up any scent, it will not be easy to follow the gunmen as they make their way through the dense vegetation.
Amongst those suspected to have escaped into the dense jungle is Guyana’s Most Wanted, Rondell Rawlins, on whose head there is a $50M price tag.
The Joint Services also believe that among those with Rawlins are men who were earlier this year identified as being part of his gang.
The Joint Services, based on information and intelligence gathered, made a surprise raid on the camp where the men were hiding and in an exchange of gunfire one of the wanted men was killed, thus confirming that for the most part, the Joint Services were on the right trail when earlier this year they identified some of the wanted men and posted picture bulletins for these individuals.
Sources within the Joint Services have indicated to this newspaper that there is no way out for the men and that it is only a matter of time before they are either captured or succumb to their harsh environment. All escape routes have reportedly been sealed off and sources indicate there is little chance for escape.
A diary reportedly found at the camp where the men were hiding reportedly provides evidence of the gang’s involvement in the Lusignan and Bartica massacres as well as possible motives for those attacks.
This should finally put paid to the speculation which was made in other sections of the media about there being more than one gang involved in the two incidents.
It should also confirm what this newspaper has reported that the Lusignan massacre was carried out because of Rawlins’s rage over his missing girlfriend.
The diary also seems to confirm that the men were planning other killings to avenge for the murder of Rawlins’s sister.
The Joint Services, while it has the experience of jungle expertise and familiarity with the area, would need to be extremely careful in their approaches for the men.
These are dangerous criminals who are armed and who are desperate.
This country has been deeply pained because of the handiwork of these men and therefore now that they are on the run, they are likely to be more dangerous.
There are, of course, other issues which must be addressed simultaneously with the hunt for the men. Clearly these men are well resourced and networked.
They had to have been to be receiving supplies and support where they were hiding.
It is troubling that having regard to the destruction and violence these men have visited on this country that there are persons in our society who would lend support and who would cavort with these hardened criminals who are believed to have shot little children in their beds.
Whether these men are their own masters or whether they are mere hired hands for other more dangerous forces in our society also has to be answered.
Hopefully, the diary recovered from the campsite at Christmas Falls will assist in this aspect of the investigation.
The first priority, however, is the capture of the men. The law-abiding citizens of this country are hoping that the men will be intercepted and intercepted quickly.
With each passing day that the manhunt continues, there are concerns that the men may have escaped the noose that has been set for them.
And these concerns are not good for the nation because if there is anything that will be welcome at this time, it will be an end to this merciless gang.
