The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) is denying claims by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) that it is importing brown sugar.
Yesterday, the PNCR in a statement said that it has received credible information that four large containers of sugar were recently uplifted by GuySuCo to satisfy local demand.
“This information seems consistent with the fact that GuySuCo is clearly hard put to balance its external commitments with meeting the demands for the local market,” the party noted.
However, the sugar company fired back in a correspondence of its own, pointing out that while seven 20ft containers were cleared from the wharf for the week ending June 7, 2008, they contained refined white sugar.
“The Corporation imports refined white sugar and has been doing so for more than fifteen years. We administer and facilitate the supplies to small manufacturers under the guidance and supervision of the Guyana Revenue Authority. In so doing, we provide a vital service to the cottage industries that require small volumes on a regular basis but in insufficient quantities to warrant direct importation.”
The sugar entity reminded that it did indeed urge distributors for prudent management of stocks in light of the inclement weather conditions which impacted on production in the first crop and the need to deliver increased quotas to Europe. It had also assured the public that it would meet the demands of the local market.
According to the PNCR statement, GuySuCo, in a press release sometime ago, had denied it was considering importing sugar and had cautioned Guyanese to “exercise prudent management of their stock.”
This was a clear indication that the Corporation had recognized that supplying the local market had become a problem, the PNCR said.
The party challenged GuySuCo to state “unambiguously whether it has difficulties supplying the local market.”
But the Corporation chided the PNCR on the statement and said it is regrettable that the party did not seek information directly from GuySuCo in an effort to clarify the matter.
“The statement will serve to create panic buying which we have been working assiduously to curb since the misleading article was published in one of our dailies two months ago stating that the Corporation was contemplating the importation of sugar.”
The Corporation also indicated that the price of sugar remained at $3,800 per bag. GuySuCo is planning to provide recommended wholesale price for areas outside of Georgetown.
“We will take firm action against any wholesaler that is engaged in hoarding and price hiking.”
