The 2008 Banks Beer first division Football tournament is scheduled to commence at two venues on June 24 and President of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Troy Mendonca commended Banks DIH for their continued support of Football in the City.
Mendonca was speaking at the launching of the second annual competition at the Conference Room of Banks DIH at Thirst Park yesterday.
The GFA head informed that this competition is the feeding ground for the 17-team Premier League and explained that the top two teams from the first division are promoted to the Premier League, while the teams that finish in the last two positions of the Premier League are relegated to the first division competition.
“This first division competition is just below the Premier League and last year Uprising and GFC went up while Western Tigers and Police were relegated. We will have eight teams in the first division tournament this year since Police, which was the ninth, are no longer playing Football,” Mendonca disclosed.
Mendonca said that the competition will be played over two rounds and the winner will get $150,000, the runner-up $75,000, the third placed team $50,000 and the fourth placed side $25,000. He added that each team will play each other in the first round before the top four teams battle each other in the second round with the winner automatically qualifying for the Premier League.
“Football is again the winner and Banks DIH, who also sponsors our Premium Beer Knockout and Coca Cola under-15 competitions, have again shown their commitment to the development of football in Guyana,” Mendonca said. Matches will be played at the University of Guyana (UG) and Campton grounds from 16:00hrs on Tuesdays, while Wednesdays will see double headers at Thirst Park from 17:00hrs
BK International Western Tigers, Huston Stars, Beacon, Thomas United, Flamingo, Northern Rangers, Black Pearl and UG will compete for top honours and Banks DIH’s Communication’s Manager Troy Peters said yesterday’s tournament launch continued the company’s excellent working relationship with the GFA.
“This tournament will attract eight of the top teams in Georgetown playing over 60 matches over the next four months on several venues in the City and should encourage football fans to support matches in their respective areas,” Peters noted.
Peters said that we are in the height of the football season with Guyana facing Suriname tomorrow in their opening World Cup qualifier in Paramaribo.
Peters, a former Guyana Hockey player, said that Banks DIH are also sponsoring a first division football competition in Linden and Berbice under the Coca Cola brand, adding that the tournament will be in progress during Carifesta 10 to be held in Guyana in August.
Peters said the competition will give the many visitors expected here for Carifesta the opportunity to see our football stars in action while at the same time sampling our award winning Banks Beer which made a distinctive mark during the inaugural Carifesta here in 1972.
“We wish the organisers well and we look forward to seeing the tournament run in a professional way…the key words to the players and officials must be ….Fair play!” Peters concluded.
The Media was also praised for their coverage of their competition and it was stated that their role in making sporting events a success is very important since sponsors want publicity and the players need their performances to be recognized.
Uprising won the inaugural tournament last year.
