Already making waves in the areas it has started, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports Inter Bloc football tournaments aimed at reviving and reinvigorating the sport at the Grass Roots level is set to hit the Interior Mining Community of Region 8, Madiha, on June 27 – 29.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Parliamentary Secretary to Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, Steve Ninvalle explained that the programme has been a tremendous success since it kicked off recently.
He said that a successful tournament was held at BV on the East Coast of Demerara, with competitions presently being contested at Victoria and Ann’s Grove also on the East Demerara. Plaisance, Melanie, Golden Grove, Enterprise, Friendship and Buxton among other villages will also come on stream shortly, while Better Hope is set to get cracking on Saturday.
The Madiha tournament has already seen 3 teams confirming their participation to date will be completed in 3-days beginning on Friday June 27 and concluding on Sunday June 29.
The leading lights on a strong organising committee are Businessman Roger Hinds and Feroze ‘Beeks’ Mootoo. The teams already confirming their participation are Campbell Town, Air Strip and Central Madiha.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle also disclosed that in an effort to assist the teams in their preparations, the Ministry will be sending a coach to assist.
National Sports Commission coach Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte will be traveling to the area sometime next week to commence work with the players. Hunte did similar work with the female players in Linden before a similar programme recently.
It is the intention of the Ministry, according to Ninvalle, that every possible area in Guyana would benefit from this initiative. Plans are already in train for the Bartica and Lethem competitions.
Buxton, Melanie atop of EDFA U-17 league Buxton and Melanie are locked on 9 points each in the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) under-17 League. Plaisance follow on 6 with BV Triumph United further back on 3.
In latest results, Black Stallion hammered Buxton 4-0 and BV defeated Ann’s Grove 3-1. Netting for Black Stallion were Mortimer John (34), Les Charles Critchlow (60), Jason Estwick (64) and Lester Dublin in the 74th minute. Leading BV to their victory with a goal each were Keon Cappell, Jumane Summerset and Kelvin Barker.
Ann’s Grove’s consolation strike was converted by Maxton Adams.
Three more games are salted for this weekend. Ann’s Grove tackle Black Stallion, Plaisance oppose Mahaica and Buxton square off with Melanie.
At the under-15 level, Buxton edged out Melanie by the odd goal in 3, defensive errors by both teams accounting for one goal each. Neylon Josephs’ strike separated the two sides.
Ann’s Grove, were too much for Plaisance defeating the latter 4-1. Plaisance took the lead through a 15th minute goal by Navardo Denny but were never able to hit the network again for the rest of the encounter as Ann’s Grove fired in 4 unanswered goals.
Keyon Bunbury in the 22nd, Kelvin Bowen 3 minutes later, Keith Bunbury in the 28th and Prince Gilkes 10 minutes later were all on target.
