DEAR EDITOR,
Sharma Solomon must be congratulated on his article captioned ‘More should be done to protect women and girls in our society’.
I do hope the relevant groups are listening, since this should not be a missed opportunity to address the escalating violence and brutality that befall our women in society almost daily.
In a male-dominated world, more stringent laws are required to protect women. Although we are aware that laws are in place, the question of whether they are enforced must be examined.
Some moons ago, Karen De Souza kept vigil and fasted outside Parliament Building to raise awareness of the violence against women and children, and other pressing and unacceptable social problems that confront Guyanese on a daily basis.
It was the most profound appeal that should have changed the nation’s outlook and brought brightness to the murky social darkness that engulfs us as a people.
I remember sitting and standing with Karen, Andaiye, Denise Dias and a number of prominent and strong women activists who have and are still working tirelessly to see change and the upliftment of women, children and the vulnerable.
These women must now come forward once again vocally and let young men like Sharma Solomon see that there is an unwillingness by those responsible. Those tasked with the wherewithal to effect some measure of change to improve the crisis mentioned above pretend to be incapable.
The failure smacks at the hypocrisy at community and national levels. Count the years Karen De Souza physically pined away outside Parliament.
Count those years since she refused to eat any solids and stood and sat in physical weakness, but with the strength of defiance and a heart that cried out loudly resounding across the nation; a cry that sadly was unable to penetrate the concrete walls a few feet from where she stood night and day.
The change we see before us is the answer to our questions.
The irony hits us when our First Lady, who has done tremendous work to save the lives of the sick and vulnerable children in Guyana, was denied access to the means to effectively continue doing charitable work.
Sharma must once again be congratulated for a well written and thoughtful piece. Well done, Salo.
