The inaugural 2008 West Berbice Cricket Association Inter-club 20/20 cricket competition gets underway today with three first round matches.
The competition, which is sponsored by Rising Sun Farms, will see thirteen teams participating with the teams being divided into two groups. Group A is made of six teams while seven are in Group B. The teams in Group A are Blairmont, D’Edward A and B, Woodley Park, Number Two Sports Club and Shieldstown.
Group B comprise of Bush Lot Sports Club, Bath Community Centre A and B, Young Achievers Sports Club A and B, Hopetown and Rainbow Generation.
Today’s matches will be contested by teams in Group A and will see Blairmont taking on D’Edward A at D’Edward, Shieldstown will be at home to D’Edward B and the final game will be contested between Woodley Park Young Strikers and Number Two Sports Club at the Number two ground.
Zone B action will get cracking on Friday also with three matches. The games scheduled are at the Bush Lot ground, Bush Lot Sports Club will be at home to Bath Community Centre A, Hopetown and Rainbow Generation will battle at Seafield, while Young Achievers B will travel to Bath to face Bath Community Centre B team; Young Achievers A have drawn the bye.
The championship trophy and sponsorship cheque of $50,000 was handed over to the organisers at a simple presentation ceremony which was held last Thursday at the Guyana Cricket Board office by Managing Director of Rising Sun Farms Reard Shivrattan.
The winning team will receive $30,000 and a trophy whilst the runners-up will take home $20,000 and a trophy. All matches are scheduled to commence at 2:00pm.
