Close family members of the owner of the pit bulls that attacked a man in Queenstown, Georgetown, said yesterday that they are being taken advantage of.
A close family member who asked not to be identified said that the victim is taking full advantage of the situation because of what he knows about the family. According to the family member, 20 year-old Rawle Ramsaywack, who was mauled by the animals, grew up with the family but was asked to leave after he started to steal from the household.
“We took Rawle off the streets when he was only 13. Eventually, his mother brought his birth certificates and he was a very pleasant child growing up…until he was a young adult,” one family member said.
This newspaper understands that Ramsaywack was asked to leave the home after he stole a quantity of jewellery from the family. However, since the incident, the family said, they have been supporting Ramsaywack financially and in any other way possible.
“We have an over-the-counter drug store, and when he came out of hospital we give him vitamins and tonics, and everyday he would come around and we would give him money,” the family member maintained.
The family is maintaining that they are not guilty of being negligent with the animals, since the dogs were properly secured in the yard, and Ramsaywack broke into their yard and was attacked while leaving.
This newspaper was told that the Police have since received information that Ramsaywack was in the habit of breaking into the said yard and removing items.
The family member said they have strong reasons to believe that Ramsaywack is a substance abuser, and they have since made offers to have him enrolled in the Salvation Army’s drug rehabilitation programme.
“We had and we still hold him as family, and we are willing to help him, but putting a large sum of money is his hand is out of the question.”
On May 20 last, Ramsaywack was attacked by three pit bulls after he had finished picking mangoes, reportedly in an empty plot of land in Forshaw Street, Queenstown.
