Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded Oswald Rambarran to prison after he was charged with escaping from lawful custody.
On June 3rd, Rambarran allegedly escaped from the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was being treated for gunshot wounds sustained earlier.
In court yesterday, he was represented by defense counsel Adrian Thompson, who said that his client, who hails from West Ruimveldt, was shot by the Police during a high-speed chase, and was in the Georgetown Public Hospital without Police guard.
According to Thompson, Rambarran was under heavy medication and, as such, walked out of the hospital. He added that, based on the instructions he received, his client was stopped by Police and tried to flee from them out of fear that they would begin shooting at him.
He pleaded with the magistrate to grant bail, since the bullet was still lodged in his client’s abdomen.
Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail on the ground that investigations are still ongoing, and other charges are likely to be instituted.
He told the court that Rambarran was seen forcing a man into his car trunk at High Street, but after he spotted the Police he sped away with the Police hot on his trail.
Police eventually caught up with Rambarran at Diamond, East Bank Demerara. Commenting on the escape from the hospital, Matthews said the Force is currently investigating that, since there was supposed to be a Police rank guarding him.
Bail was refused, but the court granted an order for Rambarran to seek medical attention to have the bullet removed.
He will return to court on June 13.
