New Amsterdam United Football Club opened their campaign in this year’s Banks DIH Coca Cola division one competition for teams in Region 5 and 6 on a winning note.
In a lone game which was played recently at the Mahaicony ground, the East Berbice team, which is made up of U-23 players, traveled the 40-mile distance and made sure that their lengthy journey, was not in vain, surprising the host with a 1-0 win.
The game was fiercely contested in front of a fair size crowd which was rooting for the Mahaicony United combination who is the front runners in this year’s competition and had played unbeaten so far.
After playing out a 0-0 first half, the New Amsterdam United team, which has a number of national junior players in its line up, was able to keep their composure against all the odds.
The game restarted in the same vain in the second segment. However it was the lads from the East that was able to break the deadlock with a goal a few minutes before the final whistle. Kelvin Joseph was the man on target for the visitors.
Receiving a pass from one of his teammates, Joseph was able to easily sway past the defence and beat the keeper as he put the ball into the back of the nets to send his team in the ascendancy and the eventual win.
The competition which has 12 teams participating has been hit by a number of postponements due to a number of problems including logistics and the unavailability of grounds.
