– cross-box destroyed, over 1,300 land line consumers affected
Police last night arrested a man who was caught red-handed torching Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) cables in the vicinity of Rahaman Park, East Bank Demerara.
The arsonist managed to completely destroy a cross-box containing copper cables, and officials said that at least 1300 of the company’s land line consumers would be affected.
They are likely to be without this service for several days, since the entire structure has to be replaced.
Passersby became aware of the man’s activity at around 21:00 hrs, after observing flames emanating from the cross-box, which is located in the vicinity of National Hardware.
The culprit was taken into custody while a fire tender was summoned to douse the flames.
However, by then, the entire structure had been damaged beyond repair.
Engineers were uncertain whether the arsonist was intent on stealing the copper wires or was deliberately attempting to vandalise the equipment.
GT&T has suffered millions of dollars in damage over the years at the hands of vandals, particularly copper seekers.
