Bishop to miss 1st match, Codrington and Richardson are back
By Franklin Wilson
Guyana’s flagship football team the ‘Golden Jaguars’ will touch down in Suriname tonight as they begin their quest for a place at the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 when the Caribbean Football Union leg of qualifying continues with second round action.
The Jaguars will be a confident unit coming off a 14 day camp in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Yesterday they engaged Pro League side San Juan Jabloteh and went under 3-2. Their goals scored by Anthony Abrams and Howard Newton.
While the result of yesterday’s warm up match does not matter to the technical staff what is more important is the fact that much needed competitive activity is what matters.
Last week the Jaguars lost to Trinidad’s Soca Warriors 3-0 in another warm up encounter.
Manager of the team Rawle Adams, speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday disclosed that the technical staff headed by Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz, are working hard on team tactics and fitness.
So far he said things have been going pretty well and they leave for Suriname a confident unit aiming to cross this first hurdle successfully.
Tried and proved midfielder Shawn Bishop will miss Saturday’s match-up since he is not feeling well according to Adams.
The English based trio Howard and Jake Newton and Shawn Beveney are the only overseas based players in the 20-man squad which is expected to be led by the inspiration Charles ‘Lilly’ Pollard who is back to full fitness.
Back in the mix of things are strikers Nigel Codrington and Gregory Richardson who were axed from the team for not following the rules.
Their inclusion is a big plus for the local side. Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules, Dwight Peters, Konata Manning, Carey Harris and Anthony Abrams will all add to the depth of the midfield and strike line for the Guyanese. The two goalkeepers included are Richard Reynolds and Andrew Durant.
And while the Guyanese squad will not be taking the Surinamese lightly, they will certainly be seeking to repeat their performance of the Digicel Caribbean Cup Regional Championship when they hammered their long time rivals 5-0 on their way to sweeping the group.
Pollard will again be at the helm of the defence and along with fellow ‘Twin Tower’ Howard Lowe and Walter Moore, will seek to nullify the offensive efforts of the host for this first leg round-two encounter.
The full 20-man squad: Charles Pollard (captain), Richard Reynolds, Andrew Durant, Howard Lowe, Walter Moore, Kelvin Smith, Carey Harris, Jake Newton, Howard Newton, Kayode McKinnon, Shawn Beveney, Konata Manning, Collie Hercules, Nigel Codrington, Gregory Richardson, Anthony Abrams, Dwain Jacobs, Quacy Johnson and Kester Jacobs.
The technical staff, Jamaal Shabazz (Technical Director), Wayne Dover (Head Coach), Kavin Pearce (Assistant Coach), Oba Gulston (Physio), Jason Pilgrim (Trainer/Physio), Frank Parris (Assistant Manager) and Rawle Adams (Manager).
In the recent FIFA Coca Cola rankings, Guyana moved 2 places up from 110 to 108.
Meanwhile, Suriname, in a warm up match on Sunday last in Trinidad, defeated Pro League side Joe Public 4-2 after being down 0-2 at the end of the first half.
