DEAR EDITOR,
Why has no one been listening to this illegal rum shop plague that is taking place all over our country?
Residents have been reporting that unlicensed rum shops have been multiplying all over Cane Grove and Guyana.
Patrons of these rum shops have been repeatedly performing acts of vandalism in their drunken stupours.
According to a resident of the area, there are approximately 30 of these unlicensed rum shops (compared with only about 10 licensed ones) which operate into the early hours of the morning.
After drinking, the vandals sometimes steal livestock, uproot and damage kitchen garden crops, litter, and behave in a lurid manner.
These bottom house rum shops start very small and then expand beyond control.
They start out with no music, and as business starts to grow, they then get a little ‘ghetto-blaster,’ then move up to big-time music sets.
When done drinking, or during their drinking sprees, they need to eat so they steal the people’s livestock, especially chickens, for “cutters,” as it is called in Guyana.
A source within the Licence Revenue Office of the Guyana Revenue Authority, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, explained that for the most part, they (those working in his office) were aware of the problems in the Cane Grove and many other areas around the country.
The source maintained that the matter was being addressed, but there were many constraints which were holding them back.
Lack of patrol vehicle is cited as one of the many hindrances by the Licence Office.
Now, this has to be the biggest crap coming from the “source,” who spoke for the Guyana Revenue Authority.
The public is not asking you to patrol on a 24-hour basis, all that is being asked is that you come once and investigate and shut it down.
Don’t tell us you can’t find a vehicle to go and investigate when a complaint is made? This is exactly why this has become a plague and blight on our society; monkey see monkey do, then they all join in.
Simply go and investigate when complaints are made, and if bogus licences are found, then shut it down immediately, once and for all.
If bogus licences are found, then investigate the Licence Office and sack those who issued these bogus licences.
We all know rum is big business, but it’s detrimental to the public.
Those in authority are failing the Guyanese public.
It is so sad to see how ordinary citizens have to suffer from yet another plague that is taking place all over Guyana.
Concerned Resident
