The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association has opened another boxing gym, this time at Timehri on the East Bank Demerara.
In an effort to continue expanding amateur boxing in all of the Regions in the country, President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Affeeze Khan, Vice President Rudolph Torrington and National Coach Carl Franklyn visited the Timehri Community Centre on Sunday last where they officially opened the gym there.
They met and had discussions with Vice President Owen Hollegin, Treasurer Sherlock Hutson, coaches Diesel Grimes and Curtis Peters and members Busmattie Amore and Mrs. Williams who forms the executives committee for the Community Centre. Based on the discussions held, the Timehri Warriors Boxing Gym was formed.
The association then handed over Boxing equipment which included boxing gloves, mouth guards, safety boxes and punching bags to the executives.
The very knowledgeable coaches, Grimes and Peters, were already identified to carry out the training of the young amateur boxers at the facility. Also National coach Franklyn will make regular visits there.
To engage and promote healthy living within the community, other activities carried out by the Centre include football, basketball and an aerobic class.
The Executive Members of the Centre have also promised to work closely with the association and Director of Sports Neil Kumar towards the development of sports in general within the community.
The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association expressed a wish for future success at the new Gym.
GABA is also encouraging all amateur boxing gyms, boxers and enthusiasts to tune in to Channel 9 TV every Sunday evening between the hours 7:00pm to 8:00pm to learn more about what the Association is doing to improve amateur boxing in the country and also to see parts of one of the best ever AIBA boxing tournament, which was the 2007 World Championship held in Chicago, USA.
