Host Albion and Port Mourant played to a scintillating tie in the first semi-final of the Busta Champion of Champions 50 overs first division knock-out cricket competition organized by the Rose Hall Youth and Sports Club in Berbice.
Former national under-19 off-spinner Orvin Mangru grabbed 6-34 as Port Mourant, chasing the 173 all out in 47.3 overs made by Albion, fell for the same total off the last ball of the final over despite half-centuries from Ravindra Ivan and Moshin Perkhan.
Albion will however advance to the Sunday June 29 final because they had scored more runs than Port Mourant at the end of the 15th over. Albion were 59-1 in comparison to Port Mourant’s 39-3 at the same stage in their innings.
Albion, without West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon, elected to bat first in sultry conditions on a slow track.
Watched by a fair size crowd, Albion were never really allowed to score freely as National under-19 player Jonathan Foo (35) former Guyana under-19 player Shastri Persaud (34) and first-class leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo (35) all failed to build on useful starts.
Pacer Yogeshwar Harrinarine (2-17), Ivan (2-32), and former West Indies under-19 batsman Roopnarine Ramgobin (2-31) combined to restrict the scoring on a heavy outfield.
When Port Mourant replied, the visitors seemed to be coasting to an easy victory at 165-4 in the 46th over before the last six wickets tumbled for eight runs as Mangru, whose 9-116 in the 1999 West Indies under-19 competition in Barbados is a Guyana youth cricket record, befuddled the batsmen with wily flight and turn to help register the competition’s first ever tie.
Ivan played an array of entertaining shots and reached the boundary five times and cleared it twice in his confident 71 while Perkhan supported with a cultured 65 decorated with six fours.
But once they were separated the innings went into terminal decline as Mangru went to work.
Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar and Scotsburg will clash in the second semi-final on Sunday June 22.
