Lloyd Smith, of Supenaam, Essequibo, was convicted yesterday by Magistrate Fazil Azeez for making a false report about a robbery.
According to a Police statement, on June 2 last,
Smith reported at the Aurora Police Station that four men with firearms had boarded a barge and pontoon that he was taking to Buck Hall. He alleged that the attack occurred in the Atlantic Ocean in the vicinity of Leonora, West Coast Demerara. According to the release, Smith claimed that the men robbed him of two water pumps, a battery and some documents.
Police said that the alleged victim subsequently gave a different version of the incident to ranks at Leonora Police Station on June 5.
“Investigations conducted revealed that, at the time, Lloyd Smith was ashore consuming alcohol with a group of friends, and could not give an account for the articles stolen, and had concocted the robbery story.”
Smith appeared yesterday in the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty and was fined $10,000 or six weeks’ imprisonment.
