Described as Guyana’s lone fighter jet, Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neal had to weather the storm to bomb her way to double world titles on Friday night at the Phillipsburg Auditorium in St Maarten.
She pounded out a split decision win in a tough contest against a game Carlette Ewell of the United States to claim the WIBA title, which she once held when she beat American Kathy Rivers here in 2004, and also successfully defended her WIBC light Heavyweight belt.
Speaking to her manager and husband, Ean Peters, explained that she originally went to St Maarten to defend her WIBC belt, but on reaching there, was informed that the WIBA title was also up for the taking.
Peters described the fight as one of the toughest he has seen O’Neal involved in and she received much credit from those watching the fight for her performance against a game opponent who tested her throughout.
The 10-round championship bout was a grueling affair with Ewell, who was a former UBC champion, going on the offensive, pressuring O’Neal with a variety of punches. The Guyanese went on the defensive and countered to good effect.
She was troubled during the contest with telling blows, which momentarily had her on the back foot, but O’Neal, backed by a sizeable flag waving Guyanese crowd, used her experience, employing ring generalship to nullify the attacks.
She boxed her way out of trouble beautifully and then launched attacks of her own, landing telling bombs to rebuff the American challenger.
In the end two of the judges gave her the clear nod, which saw O’Neal collecting the belts. The victory now takes her record of 19 fights to 14 wins 4 losses and 1 draw with 7 victories coming via the knockout route.
O’Neal is currently enjoying a brief period of rest and recuperation before being back in the gym to prepare for her next assignment.
