AAG pulls out of Pune C/wealth Youth games in India
By Sean Devers
Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) President K Juman Yassin told the media on Saturday that former national Squash champion and GOA executive Garfield Wiltshire, who holds a Master’s Degree in Sports Management, will represent the GOA at a Sports Development conference in Scotland from June 11-13 to discuss, among other things, planning for the 2014 Commonwealth games.
It was also disclosed that Guyana will participate in Boxing and Table Tennis at the October 12-18 Pune Commonwealth Youth games in India after the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) pulled out due to a lack of funds to off set the expense of sending their officials to Asia.
“Track and Field, Boxing and Table Tennis were scheduled to be the sports Guyana would have been represented in. However, while the GOA pays for the athletes, the respective Associations have to stand the cost of sending their officials,” Yassin explained.
The GOA top man informed that three places were allocated for Boxing and Table and two for track and field but since the AAG are not in a position to fund their official because of other more important engagements around the same time, an additional place each have become available for the other two sports.
“President of the Table Tennis Association Anil Nandlall and Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Affeeze Khan have both given me their commitment to this event and both the boxing and Table Tennis teams will now have four athletes each,” Yassin added.
He said that Swimming Official Karen Pilgrim will serve as the Chef-de Mission for the trip and Yassin said he has every confidence her ability to be highly successful. Yassin added that since the Table Tennis team will be a female under-18 side, Pilgrim will also double as their chaperon.
According to Yassin, Guyana will also be represented at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the South American Games in 2010 in Colombia.
The GOA also encouraged participation in their Olympic Day 10K run on June 22 from 06:00hrs from the YMCA on Thomas Road. “We urge Associations and clubs to participate and registration will begin from this week at Olympic House at Church and Peter Rose Streets,” Yassin said.
Person can run, jog or walk in this event which is an annual activity among Olympic Associations around the world.
This year, for the first time, a team event will be held in Guyana where a team, made up of three males and three females, will have a chance to win the team title.
The combined times of the six team members will be recorded and the team with the lowest time will be declared the winner.
Yassin stressed that in an effort to make the event as fair as possible, only members of clubs can form teams since if an Association like the AAG decided to form a team with six of their best runners it would put the other Associations at a big disadvantage.
He encouraged members of Cricket, Football, Hockey and other team sports to get involved in the Olympic Day Run.
