Dear Editor,
The Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) wants to draw attention to an article in the Sunday edition of the SN of 8th June, 2008, titled “Guyana gives Jamaica US$10,000 boost for rice seed nursery”.
While we acknowledge that we are in discussion with the Jamaican authorities to look at ways that Guyana can assist that country in enhancing its rice supply system, we have not given that country US$10,000 in rice seeds.
Further, the article mentioned that an official from GRDB gave a commitment to Jamaica’s Ministry of Agriculture of US$10,000 to undertake the rice project.
Additionally, the article states that a GRDB official will be visiting Jamaica this week to assist that country with its seed production. The GRDB wants to state that no financial assistance was given to Jamaica by GRDB, and no official from GRDB will be visiting Jamaica this week.
Based on our investigations, the Regional Coordinator of the Caribbean Rice Association, Mr. Azim Hoosein, is in contact with the Jamaican official, since he acts as an advisor to Jamaica on its rice issues.
The GRDB is requesting the following if there are issues that relate to the organisation: I am openly inviting the representative of the media to contact the General Manager for clarification.
Incidentally, the General Manager attended the meeting that the reporter covered for its two days’ duration, and this could have been clarified before publication.
Jagnarine Singh BSc., MSc.
General Manager, GRDB
