– Da Silva
There needs to be greater collaboration between sister countries of the Caribbean Community as it relates to the implementation of large-scale agricultural projects.
This is according to Head of the Guyana Office for Investment, Geoffrey Da Silva, who made the call during the just-concluded Agriculture Investment Forum.
The call was met with a resounding show of approval by participants.
Da Silva noted that collaboration was a key ingredient to the survival of the region as it relates to investments in agriculture. He pointed to a recent venture in Europe.
According to Da Silva, “The Europeans knew that for them to have a chance to continue in the aviation industry, they would have to create an Airbus company.”
This venture, according to Da Silva, was made possible through inputs from several European governments coupled with inputs from various stakeholders from the private sector in those countries.
“We need an Agri-bus for CARICOM.”
When asked what could be done to ensure that this notion becomes a reality, Chairman of the task force responsible for the AIF, James Moss-Solomon, said that there needs to be the minimising of risks.
He posited that, as it is, agriculture is a difficult industry to get insurance, and if one was to acquire insurance, it would be very expensive.
“We have to build into our own plans the ability to mitigate risks.”
This notion was supported by another member of the task force, Patrick Williams, who told this newspaper that there was a stigma attached to insuring agricultural projects, which needed to be addressed if the current food crisis could be tackled in a timely and efficient manner.
According to Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud, the notion of cross country collaboration in investments was important and was particularly an arena where it is hoped that the private sector would take the lead.
“The opportunities that present themselves should certainly lead to more activities in this area.”
