Gunmen made off with more than $500,000 in cash and jewellery after robbing an East Canje family early yesterday morning.
Police reports indicate that 37-year-old Ganesh Premchand, an operator at the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s Rose Hall Estate, was relieved of a gold chain and $40,000. His wife, Aumwattie, 37, was robbed of pieces of jewellery valued at $400,000, and 37-year-old overseas-based Guyanese Paul Budhoo, who was spending time with the family, was allegedly robbed of US$800 and a gold chain.
The drama began to unfold at about 00:45 hours yesterday, just as Paul Budhoo, who had arrived in Guyana a few days earlier, was about to secure the premises for the night. They had just entertained friends.
Three masked men pounced on them. The bandits were said to be armed with a rifle, two handguns, and a cutlass.
Budhoo heard a gunshot and was immediately confronted by the bandits. He was dealt a few blows with the cutlass as the bandits demanded cash and jewellery.
The victim handed over his share of items to the intruders. They then moved on to the other two victims.
Using an internal stairway, they took Aumwattie to the upper flat, where she gave them the remainder of things that were said to be stashed away in a bag that was placed in a vanity drawer.
The gunmen made their escape on foot, and in the process discharged two rounds.
After the matter was reported to the Reliance Police Station, ranks visited the scene. No spent shells were found.
The bandits remain at large, and none of the said missing items have been recovered. Investigations are still in progress.
