A useful all-round performance from former Guyana under-19 player Rakesh Goberdhan led Meter-Meer-Zorg to a comfortable five-wicket victory against Cornelia Ida (CI), while Jason Helliger’s unbeaten 38 spurred Parika Warriors to a four-wicket win against Zeeburg in yesterday’s semi-finals of the Barakat 20/20 cricket competition at the Meter-Meer-Zorg West ground in West Demerara.
Host Meter-Meer-Zorg and Parika Warriors will clash in today’s final from 13:45hrs after Zeeburg play CI from 09:30hrs in the third place play-off.
Today’s champion team will collect $50,000 and the Barakat trophy while the runner-up will take home $25,000 and a trophy. The third placed team will get $15,000.
In the first semi-final, Zeeburg fell for 94 in 19.2 overs with Devon Alleyne and Fazal Khan making 17 each. Amrit Jairam supported with 14 as former Guyana youth player Ryan Hercules took 2-13.
Brian Heubert and former Guyana under-19 left-arm spinner Sase Narine supported with two wickets each for Parika Warriors who reached 95-6 to win with eight balls to spare.
Helliger hit four fours and a six in his unbeaten 38 and got support from Alim Mohamed (15) and Yougeshwar Bachan (12) as left-arm spinner Timur Mohamed grabbed 3-15 and Dhanpaul 2-15 in a losing cause.
In the other semi-final, Imitiaz Hack stroked four fours and two sixes in an even half-century but extras (20) was the only other contributor over 12 as Goberdhan, who campaigns in Trinidad, took 2-10 with his leg-spin.
Deonauth Baksh, another former Guyana youth player who plays club cricket in the Twin Island Republic, took 2-24 and received support from left-arm spinner Avinash Shardandana who had 2-11.
Skipper Shawn McKay hit three fours and two sixes in 39 while Goberdhan (24) and opener Troy Khan (21) supported with the bat for the winners.
