Jun 08, 2008 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
It is with great trepidation and shock that I read in your newspaper of Friday, June 06, 2008 that the Honourable Mr. Robert Corbin’s life has been threatened as a result of ensuring that Guyana doesn’t become another home for harbouring drug masterminds.
However, I noted last Thursday, 29th May 2008, that the Leader of the PNCR received an anonymous phone call which in essence said that, if Mr. Corbin does not desist from talking about Roger Khan, he would be killed.
This is indeed an eye opener that everyone who speaks against crime and corruption, which are booming greatly under the PPP/C Government since 1992, is being threatened by anonymous phone callers in our society today.
This is totally unacceptable and disgraceful in any democratic society like Guyana, where we should have freedom of expression. This threat to the Leader of the Opposition’s life reminds me of George Bacchus, who was brutally killed for enlightening the nation about crime in our society a few years ago, and we should not sit idly by and allow history to repeat itself.
In this case, there is a need for the Government to act immediately in protecting Mr. Corbin’ safety, as the Leader of the Opposition and Member of Parliament.
I strongly believe that it is everyone’s democratic right to express his or her views for the interest of the nation without any fear.
I noted the Opposition Leader said that calls of this nature would not silence him, that he would continue to speak out on all of the issues affecting the Guyanese people, including the killing of several of them between 2002 and 2004 by the phantom death squad, and this has truthfully proven that Mr. Corbin is a true and strong leader who loves his country and his people and wants to see that Guyana is free from organised crime, money laundering, drug trafficking and corruption in our society, where every citizen can live and work happily in Guyana.
I wish to commend Mr. Corbin for expressing his views without any indulgence of partiality or fear, and standing up for what he believes is right for the benefit of every citizen in protecting the nation.
In closing, I am calling on the Government of Guyana to provide the Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Mr. Robert Corbin, with the maximum security for his safety and protection in the wake of this meaningless attack.
