Chairman of the Guyana Scrap Metal Dealers Association, Perry Cole, yesterday issued a warning that all buyers or exporters in the trade will feel the full penalty of the law should they be caught with any manhole covers belonging to Guyana Water Inc. (GWI), or copper material belonging to the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph entity.
Yesterday, in an interview, the chairman said that his declaration was prompted after he recently received a letter from the GWI that dictated that manhole covers, are being stolen from the road, are possibly being sold to scrap metal dealers.
Cole indicated further that any dealer caught transferring metal with copper content from border to border will also be penalised by law.
He added that, although scrap metal dealers and exporters were warned by President Bharrat Jagdeo, at a previous meeting, to clear the road parapets and to refrain from packing containers with metal that are left at the roadside, such actions still continue unchecked.
The chairman noted that warning letters will be sent to those responsible, and severe sanctions will be taken against them if they refuse to heed the warnings.
According to Cole, President Jagdeo, at an earlier meeting, indicated to dealers and exporters that if they do not comply with the rules set for them, he will stop the trade.
He expressed frustration yesterday that regardless of all this, persons still continue to break every rule imaginable that are related to the scrap metal trade.
Cole declared that his association cannot afford to have the trade halted, since that can result in great negativity and severe loss of earnings for those concerned.
The chairman declared yesterday that he does not deal or trade in copper material, and urged those guilty of this act to desist instantly, to ensure the trade continues.
Over time, the GWI, GPL and the GT&T have suffered immensely, since persons have developed the habit of stealing copper materials, manhole covers and other items from these entities.
Sussex Street and several other areas are among the sites where the scrap metal trade is flowing gradually into the streets.
