The driver of a Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) vehicle has been arrested following an accident, at around 16:30 hours at Hampton Court, which has left a rice farmer dead and another man in a critical condition.
According to reports, the now dead man, who was identified as Arun Persaud, a rice farmer, of Sparta, Essequibo Coast, was on a motorcycle heading to his rice field in Hampton Court when tragedy struck.
It was reported that the man’s cousin, Narine Persaud, was also on the motorcycle at the time.
Eyewitnesses said that the GRA vehicle, which was moving at a fast rate, slammed into the motorcycle, causing the rider to lose control.
Reports are that the motorcycle, along with the two men, was flung into a nearby trench.
Several residents rushed to the scene to render assistance, but were confronted with the apparent lifeless body of Arun Persaud whose feet were both severed.
Narine, who sustained serious injuries to his head and upper body, was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he remains a patient. His condition is listed as critical.
The body of Arun Persaud was transported to the Sandy’s Funeral Home at Suddie. He was the father of one. The driver of the GRA vehicle was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. The GRA vehicle has since been impounded at the Suddie Police Station.
