A teacher attached to the Charlestown Secondary School was remanded to prison, yesterday, on a charge of indecently assaulting a student.
The accused, 32-year-old Gopaul Ramatulla, made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that on June 3, last, at Charlestown, he indecently assaulted a female First Form student who is below the age of consent.
It is also alleged that on the same day he made use of threatening language to the same student. To both charges the accused pleaded not guilty. He is being represented by defense counsel Nigel Hughes.
Hughes, in making a bail application for the teacher who hails from 165 Middle Road, La Penitence, said that his client has an unblemished record.
The attorney pointed to the fact that in these cases persons are forced to endure lengthy periods of incarceration before their trial commences.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail on the ground that the virtual complainant, who is only 13 years old, attends the same school where the accused teaches and if released on bail it is likely that the accused would interfere with her.
Matthews told the court that the teacher fondled the teen. Bail was refused and Ramatulla is expected to make his next court appearance on June 10.
