The efforts of two police officers and the curiosity of several public-spirited citizens may have been instrumental in saving the life of a 33-year-old man who was severely beaten about his body and left for dead in a roadside hut along Sheriff Street.
According to reports, the man, Bobby Khan, of Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, sustained the severe beating at around 17:00 hours on Thursday by two prominent city businessmen and about eight others.
Reports are that the men held the man against his will since they suspected that he had stolen an electrical cord and were of the belief that he has stolen some steel rods which reportedly are the property of one of the businessmen.
An eyewitness told this newspaper that Khan had admitted to stealing the cord and was prepared to return the stolen property but denied stealing the rods when he was forcefully taken to a construction site and strapped to a post before he was brutally thrashed.
It was reported, too, that a few of the men had trained guns on the victim and had threatened to shoot him. This prompted Khan to beg them to kill him to rid him of the pain he was in.
This newspaper was told that the men who inflicted the beating are well-known to the man.
It was reported that the men used cords, crowbars, a baseball bat and a sizeable piece of wood to beat the man about his body, inflicting injuries to his head, back, stomach, feet, hands and other parts of his body, which bore the bloody evidence.
Several residents admitted that they heard the man’s screams. They said that the entire ordeal lasted for about two hours after which the man’s limp body was unstrapped, placed in a wheel barrow and dumped into the hut a few yards away. He was found there yesterday morning, groaning in pain.
The man who appeared to be lapsing in and out of consciousness when Kaieteur News arrived on the scene at around 12:00 hours yesterday was sprawled on the floor of the hut with several visible blood-clotted wounds.
A number of residents had also gathered at the scene expressing their disgust that such an incident was even carried out on another human being.
And according to one resident, he had made several calls to the Kitty Police Station regarding the matter but no rank came to the scene. The man said that he even attempted to stop a passing patrol, but that those ranks had informed him that they could not stop.
Further, the man said that he had been desperately trying to call an ambulance three hours prior to the arrival of this newspaper but none had turned up at the scene.
However, assistance was rendered to the injured man by two passing officers who had stopped to enquire what the cause for the gathering outside the hut was.
The officers in their attempt to garner information of what occurred were given the dreadful details of what happened. The officers after taking a statement from the injured man and a few others, waited a while longer for the arrival of the ambulance to transport the injured man to the hospital before deciding that using a taxi might be more realistic.
One officer in an attempt to solicit information from one of the businessmen was unable to acquire any substantial information but warned that once sufficient evidence that an unlawful act was carried out persons will be dealt with according to the law.
Meanwhile, several residents of the area claimed that t
hey are even fearful for their lives since they are of the belief that one of the businessmen who inflicted the beating has police associates and may try to be vindictive because the beating was reported.
However, by late yesterday afternoon reports reaching this newspaper were that the businessman who spearheaded the beating was arrested and was subsequently placed on bail.
